Oh, I wanted to add that in the photos you certainly don't see all the scapes the plants have produced. At the beginning of the year my plan was to let the old scapes stay till the end of the season then collect them and make notations about bud count, scape height, etc. However, that did not work out so well. Some scapes just seemed to get lost in the day to day deadheading procedure, others had rust and had to be removed, then as the season progressed the number of dead and dying scapes became an eyesore, and I started pulling them and tossing them. It would have become almost a full time job trying to keep up with them all. Plus I was gone for a month and just got really behind. Here is a photo of one of the above clumps of 'Crimson Pirate' with some dead scapes still left in it. If you enlarge the photo you can see how distracting the dead scapes can be. I have recently taken some photos later to find how distracting dead scapes can be in a photo also.
