I've had issues with squirrels digging up my potted plants. I found that if I put small stones or gravel on top of the soil, they won't touch it. I've also used 2-3 larger stones instead of gravel, just to cover up the bare dirt, and that seems to work as well. Good luck - it's very frustrating when critters dig up your plants!
