I would think that the yellowing problem may have been caused the first year by the sulfur sitting in the clay soil and blocking the absorption of nitrogen/nitrates. The sulfur in and of itself was slightly more than the recommended amount, but usually does not cause damage. The addition of good organic material would be beneficial.
