I think virginica has 3 same-size petals. I didn't see it in person like you did but in the pic it looks like the lower is a smaller petal than the other two, that they usually refer to as clear, but agree yours & many other pics show a blue hue to the clear petal(s.) Opaque might be a better term for those different petals on some of the species.
