Mary, Many irises bloom the first year, especially if you have a long growing season. Here in Wisconsin, about half will bloom the summer after planting, and most of the rest will bloom the next year. And yes if the rhizomes get too crowded, they won't bloom well, so they need to be dug up and/or thinned out some.
