Sometimes members give them as a compliment about a post of photo. Like a "thumbs-up", but more emphatic because we have to "earn" acorns and only have limited numbers.
The "acorn" icon, as well as the "Thumbs-Up" icon, usually appear in the lower-right corner of whatever you might want to compliment.
