They do like sun but this summer, in the northeast, was exceptionally hot so they may have suffered in pots. They won't suffer from being cut back. I've done it many times. If you could repot them, adding compost, it would benefit them. Make sure to add mulch to keep the water from evaporating as fast as it must have.
