I'd say it's somewhere in between. It definitely is not like the picture on the left - I would say that was taken in the morning and in the shade, which makes things look more blue.
Here are a few of my pictures of it from this year, the first is in the morning and the others are in the afternoon/evening, after hot days. Mary's Baby takes the heat better than most purples - it doesn't melt.
