If you are buying them bareroot, January or February. If from pots, early spring or early fall. When I lived in California (Zone 8), I was lucky enough to live near several wholesale nurseries that were willing to sell retail. Also, independent nurseries usually have bareroot trees and, later in the spring, potted trees. They will be selling trees that are right for your area. If you are shopping at a big box store, the trees will be in pots but be aware that what the the big box store is selling isn't necessarily right for the conditions in your area.
