Sally, when I set up a potting area for myself I make the work surface at a height that is easy for me to work on and not be hunched over and that I can sit at on a tall stool. Width and length wise I try for a nursery flat deep plus two foot of work space (36") , or something that will hold a bale on one end so I can just scoop out soil with out bending down. I also like having a stack of various size pots at eye level on a shelf behind bench so I don't have to search for another 4" or trade gallon! Also nice to have a 'permanent' water set up right there. Once had that and a deep sink. sigh
Was very lucky to inherit several professional sturdy plastic benches from Woods Nursery when they moved to Fla.

My assortment of rusty tomato cages always seem to come in handy. Most recently to disuade deer from cutting thru my back yard!
