I go both ways. No labels on my mature plants but I label the dahlias so I can tell them apart for storage. I also stick in the label of store bought plants for the first year so I can remember the variety. I have to label my spring bulbs and baby seedlings when I plant them so I don't dig them up in the spring (although I oft do that anyways
