Yep, you're right about the good stiff brush, especially in my red clay soil. Yuck.

I grew ginger years ago here but planted it too late and didn't get much of a harvest. And that, too, was in hardpacked clay soil. I should try it again in one of my raised beds which contains nice loose friable soil, and I could put plastic over it for an early start. It's a pretty long season crop but I'd have to go look it up to remember how long. Hmmm...and I was needing some ginger recently for kale I was gonna cook. Maybe I'll put that on my spring growing list!
