I sometimes get very small single fans from Curt Hanson as a personal gift. Other than giving them another year to get some growth, I have not had any problems growing them. Sometimes these are very small pencil sized fans that have broken off when he has divided clumps. The price is right (free) and after 2-3 years, you would not know that they were small when planted. I have not ordered a lot of daylilies in the last few years, so don't have a recent experience other than Curt's to go by -- but generally, I do not hesitate to get singles. I do not recall any time I have planted singles and been disappointed. Sometimes when I went to visit John Rice, I would ***purposefully** buy rooted prolifs and they also have done fine. Can't get much smaller single than a rooted prolif.
