I wouldn't say martagon bulbs "multiply like crazy". Some might not even multiply much at all. Most of the cultivars on the market tend to be more vigorous, but it's a crap shoot with seedlings.

Don't give up. Yes, that is the key. Sometimes lilies, for whatever reason and martagons especially, simply decide not to grow above the soil surface for season (maybe even two). More often this happens after transplanting, but I have experienced it while in undisturbed pots and even in the ground undisturbed.
