I think I tend to go the other way, I pinch everything.

Coleus definitely do better when pinched. I could make a career of just pinching the coleus cuttings that I have propagating in the house now. I pinch something every time I pass them. It's an obsession.

The wave-type spreading petunias don't seem to need pinching. But the more old-fashioned type do seem to do better if pinched. Then I give them hard haircuts through summer.

Zinnias do better if pinched. The plant becomes bushier. (is that a word?)

A lot of established plants in my garden get pinched, too. Definitely hardy hibiscus. Definitely lobelia cardinalis.

Pinching can delay blooming, so it's sort of a trade off. A few stems of lobelia cardinalis blooming by the end of July? I'd rather pinch and have 3 or 4 times as many stems with flowers starting a week or two later.

Some just need to be cut back hard in summer for rebloom- like alyssum, petunias, coreopsis moonbeam, or butterfly weed.
