We have a lovely big park across the street from me which goes to the beach and ocean. One day this summer I was sitting on a park bench and watching a lady that was sitting on a bench a ways down from me and she was feeding the squirrels. Probably peanuts but some type of nuts. Some of the squirells were eating their nuts right away and others would grab one and scurry away to hide it. She only threw out one nut at a time so the gang of squirrrels needed to be quick if they wanted to get in on the action.
