It reminds me of how homes usually had flower gardens in front of the house and the veggie gardens were out of sight behind the house. However, southern European migrants usually had veggie gardens in front of the house, and probably more behind it. For some reason it always looked strange to see tomatoes, lettuces and the like out in front.
