I've painted rocks for years (and bricks and edgers) and you can use acrylic paints with no problem. We have a tutorial here somewhere, I'll see if I can find it for you, Kassia.

The most important thing to do prior to painting is to make sure your rocks are really clean. I use a wire brush or a kitchen scrub brush. depending on the rock.
