Caroline, I've used toilet paper rolls for years to start seedlings but never thought of rolling up newspaper and stuffing it in the bottom. I usually just press down the soil for the bottom first inch but sometimes it falls out if the soil gets too wet. Your idea should solve the problem! I also use them around tomato seedlings to stop cut worms as well. The whole family saves these things all year long for me!!! Thanks!
