If it is a plastic pot, I use Dave's drill, and drill about 4 smaller holes around the bottom.
If it is ceramic, hopefully someone else will chime in...I only tried it once, and despite using a ceramic drill bit and tape, I still cracked, so I haven't been brave enough to try again.

I do put screen, or coffee filters, or gravel in the bottom of all my pots.
