Broccolo Spigarello is a cold-hardy Italian leaf broccoli that over-wintered in my garden. It's suppsoed to be cold-hardy down to 25F, and Zone 8b averages 15F - 20F minimum temp, but this was a mild winter.
Anyway, it never flowered in its first year, but this spring (when it was around 10-11 months old, it flowered profusely! I hope to get plenty of seed.
Onl;ine sources all call it an "annual vegetable", but shouldn't I call it biennial if it only seeds the spring after it was sown? I sowed it late last spring or early last summer. Maybe if I had sown it before the last forst it would have flowered and seeded last year.
I may not have 30 individual plants, so it may not be a stable population if I propagate it for severa,l years, but it is pretty!
