The only reason you should not mulch now is your weather conditions. Tromping on wet soil is never a good thing, as it compacts and destroys soil structure that is more vital than fertile soil vs. non-fertile. The only other thing that might delay is if you think there might still be sprouts underground that you would accidentally step on.
