There's different schools of thought on that Jay, as they are both really the same species with slight variations often due to location. Some people don't believe there should be subspecies. There's no reason why the 'straight' species can't fit in the 'straight' species epithet, besides the Plant List gives hypericoides 2 stars in the confidence level where subsp. multicaule only has one.
