I'm with you, Sharon, the green things look familiar but I can't place them. The bumps on your witch hazel are galls, usually made by certain kinds of aphids. I had those things on another plant several years ago and found a good research report about them...was pretty interesting how the aphids made those little "houses" for themselves. I'll see if I saved that report somewhere. And not to worry, they don't do severe damage to the trees.
