I have some of that stuff in my garden but it's not big and robust like this plant! I'm finding plenty of photos which do look the same, but the one I know is much more flimsy like the photos on this link.. in fact, today I noticed several young plants about the size of the one in the top right ..

chelle, are you talking about the mare's tail Equisetum arvense which has a ferny growth and roots which go down the the centre of the earth? Hilarious! I don't think this plant does that, I used to have it but lucky in my garden I have now there's none.
