I've seen Mare's Tail reach over ten feet tall with stems that were nearly an inch in diameter. It's usually much smaller, but it can be a pretty beefy plant.

It grows best with a lot sun and heat, on a 90 degree day in early summer it can be noticeably bigger in the evening than it was in the morning. Perhaps that is why it is smaller for you in the UK, Janet?
