I just potted up some small plants, sent to me in February.... DRs can hang for a long long time. Humidity does play a part, dryer, less time hanging.
I think I read that the growers in Thailand, where it's generally quite humid, hang their plants for two to three months before a show, to make them bloom profusely. I had a plant that went right on growing while it was hanging. And those two huge buggars that I dug from my friend's yard? They are still soilless, in the pots that I used to bring them home in. I keep changing my mind as to what I want to do with them. One is still blooming and has set three seed pods like that! hahahaha, and
Two photos of the same plant, note water bottle on the ground for size. Neither plant had a big caudex, but LOTS of feeder roots.
