The best way I've found to plant a clump (rather than individual rosettes) is to make a mound of thick mud a couple of inches higher than the surrounding soil surface. Hold the clump roots-up in your dominant hand and quickly flip it and slap it into the mud (all in one smooth motion). You will have great soil to root contact and the plants will still be slightly above grade for better drainage.
