I'm lucky (I guess) to garden on a very sandy loam. But I sell beardless irises, so I have to keep watering all the time. I find my taller sedums do very well getting a lot of water in a sandy area. I grow them right along with my siberians and Japanese iris. I don't think you would want to do that on a clay soil, but on sand it works.
