Yes, Thomas Drummond, a Scot, brought it to England and it was selected and re-selected throughout Europe. It was very popular in the US early in the 20th century and is just lately being "rediscovered". I don't believe it ever lost popularity in Europe. One of the loveliest new cultivars is from Germany, in English called 'Twinkle Star'. There are now short ones and taller ones - 'Tapestry Mix' gets to about 20", 'Promise' about 6". Most are fragrant as well. The species is a bright rose-red.

I'm obviously quite fond of this plant! Hilarious!
