Yes the Hosta link does go to your fern post, there's a Hosta in the photos!
I wouldn't be too concerned about the shieldbug, I like to see them and they are never in large numbers. They have predators the same as anything else, if you didn't have these then you would not be helping to ensure the survival of both this species as well as other species which rely on them.
