The beach before a hurricane is AWESOME! Talk about a Calm Before The Storm, the weather is THE BEST right before a hurricane. That is my favorite thing to do just before a storm, sit with a glass of wine and watch the weather change. I don't even drink wine but is it on the top of my Hurricane Prep List!
I sleep really well when the storm rolls in.
Our first experience with hurricanes came in 1983 with Hurricane Alicia. We were new to the area. We watched the news a little not knowing what we were looking at. It sat in the Gulf for DAYS building and getting bigger every day. I kept asking our neighbors, "Is this something we need to worry about?" He said, "Naaaaaah". The weather of course was awesome the day before so we gathered up all the new neighbors for a BBQ. I was in line with my neighbor at the store. Everyone's cart had water, canned goods, candles etc. I had a Gallon of Blue Bell Peaches and Cream Ice Cream and some Margarita Mix. He had beer and a box of DooDads. What was wrong with that picture??
H. Alicia was historically one of Houston's worst. It was relentless. I woke up the next day hung over to the phone ringing. It was my neighbor. "HEY! Y'all have a tree on your house!" It was true! But worse,imagine the remnants of a party with no electricity. My house was littered and garbage full of plastic cups and paper plates. I had BBQ food in the disposal, melting ice cream in my freezer and we were out of tequila!
My BIL was in town and he vowed never to come back!
Somehow we survived 10 days without electricity in August just from being young and stupid! We were grilling pizza looong before Grilled Pizza became the fad only because there was nothing left but frozen foods in the grocery store. We also grilled frozen mac and cheese. It was deeelish!
I am too old for those kind of adventures now. I am fully prepared for any storm.
