I also put cayenne or chili powder in the hole.
The smell is supposed to stop rodents from foraging among the bulbs.
The rodents tend to like tulip bulbs,but they do dig the daffodils and scatter them.
Tamp the soil and water it, also discourages the rodent raiders.
