Hazeleyes, I live in a zone 5 area and I also have daylilies to plant in the ground now. What I'm doing is using alfalfa pellets. When I dig my hole I dig a little deeper put a good handful of alfalfa pellets in the ground, mix it with the soil and then plant the daylily on top of it. The alfalfa pellets help to keep the ground warmer a little longer and pellets also help to improve the soil. You don't want the pellets to come directly in contact with the roots.
