I have been growing larkspur & poppy seeds for the last several years & they really don't seem to need any special attention to grow where I scatter them! They both self-seed freely as well!
I will be killing some grass on my back burm area with Ornamec or Over the Top herbicides to prepare for more wildflowers & lighly raking it to scatter bluebonnet seeds for the spring. I have collected a lot of natives from areas that are going to be wiped out when either commercial buildings or houses are built on the sites.
I just collected a native false foxglove that is blooming in my area right now...Agalinis heterophylla. I had never noticed it before but maybe the rains a few weeks ago got them going!
I also am seeing lots of other natives blooming again like native coreopsis that bloomed in the spring. They also self seed freely!
I will be planting some columbine seeds as well as some penstemon seeds I bought that need cold stratification.
I had collected a lot of pansy seeds last early spring before the heat ruined them & have made a flat to see if any will sprout for me. I get tired of purchasing them every fall but love the color as well as the winter flowers here! I had a ton of Varigated Frittilary caterpillars this last early spring on them for the first time!
It's raining all day here just west of DFW...so the wildflower prep will have to wait!
Take care,
Lila
