Hi Sue,
Your comment made me try to remember things my grandmother did when she relaxed. She pieced quilts around the fire in the evenings, she quilted during winter, but I don't remember that she read much and of course there was little technology so she didn't talk on the phone or watch TV. I remember the music though, there was always music. So you are right, she was always providing for her family.

A root cellar is simply for me a dream wish for my plants; in bringing my plants in for the winter, I began to think of old cellars. It's as you say, I only have myself to provide for now, so there isn't much food storage anymore. Maybe we do have to get to this age to realize the importance of things long gone.
