Thanks Evey. I would have preferred to sustain damage to the fence, the garden shed, the deck - anything else that I could have repaired. I can't imagine what it's going to be like to dig out the roots of those trees to replace them. I don't know if it's even possible. They're on a terraced portion of the back yard right next to the fence and a drop-off, and form the backdrop of a narrow strip of the garden that I like to call Hybrid Tea Row. Getting in there will be really difficult, and I'm sure I'd have to dig up the perennials around them to keep from stepping on them while digging out the roots. I don't even want to think about this.

Is it too early for a drink yet? (It must be after 5:00 PM somewhere in the world!)
