I just have a lean (not fertile rich) soil that has: all purpose sand (not play sand), some gypsum mixed in for drainage, small angular crushed limestone gravel mixed in (also for drainage), a small handful of both Yum Yum Mix & Planters II (that I got at High Country Gardens) and small angular crushed limestone gravel on top of the soil. It works well with Agastache, Salvia, Penstemon, Lavender plants and Butterfly Weed plants.
