While this plant is related and is similar to species of the genus Allium, there is no smell of garlic or onions when he crushed it. It is native to South America, growing wild in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, but it has become naturalized as a yuyo in other parts of the world which include Europe, North America and the South of Australia. In our country there are two varieties, which are seen in the photos are the variety gracile that found in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Catamarca, Chaco, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Formosa, missions, Río Negro, Santa Fe and San Juan.

It is a bulbous perennial herb which has whitish, fleshy roots. Its leaves are paralelilervadas (characteristic of Monocots), lanceolate, flat, arising from the bulb. The inflorescence is on a stem (scape) of 20 to 40 cm in height with umbel of 8 to 15 flowers small with approximately 2 cm long pedicels. They are bell-shaped, white with reddish veins to brownish on the back side of the tepals and greenish bases
