Can anyone suggest a variety of Giant Hyacinth that is likely to be somewhat longer-lived in Zone 8b (Pacific Northwest)? I planted bulbs for the first time in 2010, and they were great the first year, fewer and smaller the next year, and almost all dead or tiny this year.
The pink ones died after the first year, but not all the blue and white ones are dead yet.
I understand they prefer or need a colder winter ... my average low is 15-20 F, but it fluctuates up and down all winter, and we have more rain than snow.
Would better drainage help them last?
Are these varieties likely to be better adapted to Zone 8?
Hyacinthus orientalis 'Achilleus'
Hyacinthus orientalis 'Snow Pearl'
Grape Hyacinth really flourish and multiply. (But I don't like them much.)
One big red Lilly is thriving and expanding inexorably. I think it started a new plant 7-8" away from its clump.
Crocus vernus are holding their own and maybe multiplying slowly. However, this year they tried to open for a week or two, then a cold snap, lots of cold rain, and some freezing rain/slush accumulation made the blooms decide to rot instead of open.
One or two tulips show no sign of fading.
Daffodils were great the first year, maybe 1/3 to 1/2 came back the next year, and only two came up this year. Are there daffodil varieties more suited to mild winters?
