Cut new growth, look for a stem about 1/2 the width of a pencil, and one which has several leaf nodes as you want to bury one or two nodes deep.
Sterilize pruners, make a clean 45 degree cut. Remove lower 2 sets of leaves and stems, make a scraping or bruising at the lower 1/2 inch of stem, dip in water then rooting hormone (optional), set into pots filled with (your choice - everyone has their favorite) 1/2 & 1/2 grit and compost, or just straight perlite, or just plain vermiculite) and keep covered with (a bell jar, or a clear plastic bad, or a clear plastic container; then set the pots indoors on a heat mat near a bright window, or outside in a sheltered location out of the sun. Check and mist daily, remove the covering occasionally as the cuttings do like a change of air. You may see roots in about 2 to 3 months. When rooted - create some Bonsai and make us all proud.
There is also the option of air layering, but that would require your F-in-L's permission and his patience.
As you can see, there may be a difference of opinion on several points; try all the different options to see what's best for you. And good luck.
