I know what you mean about different ideas of shade. Full shade in my garden is almost imperative for many plants because of the triple-digit summer temperatures. Primulas, for example, would fry here if they had any sun at all, but sun's important in cooler zones.
My own Marmalade Skies is in an area that's shaded by trees for all but 2 or 3 hours a day, but I'm seeing it on everyone's lists of roses for the shade, so it's getting a good reputation for that.
