Does anyone know what causes this type of deformation in a seedpod?

Several of one cultivar's pods have the extra part on the third chamber (ie., 2,2,3) and I am seeing the same now with another cultivar. The other pods (other than the quads) are normal (I think you need to click on the pic to get a full view??):

I understand that it is not a polymerous bloom or it would be 2,2,2,2 but am wondering what causes the 2,2,3 to occur (I just noticed that if you click on the last pic, the pod on the right has the 2,2,3 , too)?
