One of the founders, David Holmgren, presents an operational definition of permaculture in the form of a flower, to illustrate the basic procedure for thinking in a permaculture mode.

A new definition of the permaculture flower has been proposed at PRI --Permaculture Research Institute of Australia. To my mind, this Americanized model leaves out some essential themes that are important in the original model. The fact that permaculture is ethics driven, for example, and the idea that permaculture systems are not designed, just to meet human needs in a particular situation--they are at the same time meant to heal the earth, i.e. the designs are meant to relate to natural ecosystems and global environmental concerns..
