When you say traits, do you mean as in fuzzy, smooth, large, small, color, watermarkings, etc.?
Sorry to say, I do not have a very scientific mind.
Maybe there is some one here that can give us more information.

We do have Kevin Vaughn that understands that type of thing. He is a noted hybridizer of a number of different types of plants. Hosta, iris, sempervivum are but a few of them.

Maybe we can get him to answer questions in a thread devoted to that topic?
