I trim the leaves back to 5"-6" in a fan shape, and trim the roots back to 3" or so, and use a Sharpie pen to write ID on a leaf. Then I wash the rhizomes (not leaves) in 10% bleach water, let them dry thoroughly, and pack them in a priority box using shredded paper to stabilize them in the box. Once the box is all taped up, I use scissors to poke holes in all four sides of the box for ventilation.

Sometimes it takes me a week or two to dig all the Irises that are going to one person. Once they have dried from being washed, it's no problem for them to wait in a dry location for shipment.

Hope this helps.
