Where abouts in Alabama, Sheri ? We spent most of last winter on Dauphin Island. I have heard of folks in very heavy rain areas, planting in raised beds, 6"-8" tall, and with the top 1"-2" of "pea gravel". The rhizome sits on top of the gravel, and the roots extend down through it, into the soil beneath. With enough "crown" to the top of the bed, so water runs off, this seems to work for them.. Our trouble is usually not enough rain!....Arlyn
