I use Miracle Grow Moisture Control in all my pots. The grasses and trees that are in the same pot for multiple years (some up to 15 years) get lifted and new MG put in the bottom and sides of the pot when the soil compacts over time (3-5 years depending on the plant). I use enough that I buy the big bags at Costco for $10 a bag in season. I have been very successful using it as my starting medium in the spring and summer for cuttings. Since I generally use the coconut fiber baskets for hanging sedums I even use it for them. I haven't had any problem with it staying too wet. Have never had root rot. The hostas that I had in planters last summer were so big that by fall I decided to get them in the ground. They are looking really good this summer and have multiple eyes having got a great start. If you have to use potting soil it is the best I have found. Some that I have tried compacted and were just too heavy since my pots have lots of perennials left outside year round.
