I'm guessing this friend wasn't very familiar with alocasias, those little nuts are reliable as can be!

Your plant must have been of good size to have 40 bulbils they make em fast once mature, but 40 is alot!

Interesting idea to cover it, I wouldn't have, and would have told that will cook em to death, shows what I know....
