Edibles and Ornamentals
Since we spend a majority of our time talking about roses in the newsletter, it's always exciting when we get a chance to share something new and different. Weeks is pleased to announce our own line of fruit trees and ornamentals for the 2011 season called 'Weeks Edibles and Ornamentals'. Over forty varieties of almonds, apples, apricots, Asian pears, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, pomegranate and wisteria will be available nationwide at nursery and garden centers for the first time this upcoming spring.
These two-year beauties grow in our fertile, sun drenched fields in Wasco, California, right along side our rose crop. In addition to a wide selection of varieties, different sizes of trees will also be available.
Each fruit tree type lists several varieties to suit every taste and be successful in differing climates. Our assortment of a dozen different apples includes favorites such as Red Delicious, Jonagold and Fuji. For the bakers in your family, Granny Smith and Winesap are also on the menu.
There is no longer a need to be limited by common peach varieties offered at your local supermarket. We offer ten different types, including both Babcock and Giant Babcock, known for their sweet white delicious flavor. In northern areas, Reliance is a frost resistant peach that provides gardeners another option.
In addition to the favorites of Bartlett and Buerre d'Anjou, we are offering three more pear varieties: Blake's Pride, Bosc and Comice. Three different apricots include Moorpark, Royal and Tilton, all self-fruitful types, providing variety for canners, bakers and others who are simply fruit lovers.
If you enjoy the firm texture, yet juicy flesh of Asian pears, both Hosui and Shinko are available. A trio of nectarines, plums and prunes are also available giving gardeners a choice depending on taste and location.
If you fancy almonds, then you should consider our four different varieties, including Peerless, Mission, Nonparell and Butte.
For color in the landscape and edible fruit, don't forget the incredibly nutritious Pomegranate. Wonderful begins with attractive ruffled scarlet flowers that mature to become large bright red fruit. Wonderful earns the name by needing only 150 chilling hours and is self-fruitful as well.
Our one ornamental offering at this early stage is the Chinese Blue wisteria. A stunning vine with cascading spires of fragrant violet blue flowers that announce the arrival of spring in your garden.
We will be adding more ornamentals, berries and a broader selection of fruit in the future.
